Lady Madonna arrived before the record did. I believe she was a $5 Lowe’s clearance orchid bought late in 2025, but I did not start tracking her until January. By then, the useful part of the story was already clear: she had been close to dead when I brought her home and was still trying to decide whether recovery was worth the trouble.

The first photographs were not especially glamorous. She had drooping older leaves, a lot of stress written across the plant, and roots that needed close attention. The crown was intact, though, and there was new growth in the center. That was enough reason to keep going.

Then she produced a spike.

It appeared in mid-January, developed slowly through February and March, and opened into deep purple flowers in early April. An orchid that had nearly died had managed a full bloom cycle. For a while, that looked like the ending.

Lady Madonna had other ideas. A move in June left her packed for roughly two weeks and visibly set her back. The flowers were gone, the older leaves hung low, and the plant had to settle into another environment. This time the recovery happened mostly underground. By July, the clear pot showed a dense root system with several bright green growing tips. The leaves still carried the cosmetic evidence of the move, but the roots were doing exactly what they needed to do.

On July 26, a small folded green point appeared in the center of the crown. It may be the beginning of a new leaf. That identification is still tentative, but it is the right kind of uncertainty: Lady Madonna is no longer being watched to see whether she survives. She is being watched to see what she grows next.

Lady Madonna had a nice surprise this week: a new flower spike, first noticed on 8/28 and already visible in the 8/23 photo. After spending the summer recovering from the move, she appears ready to bloom again. Her roots remain strong, the foliage is stable, and the new spike is developing cleanly from a leaf axil. For now, care will stay the same while we let the spike gain some length before staking.
