Historical Session Metadata Normalization

Summary

Today’s session closed an important gap in the Abbey historical review workflow.

Several completed session updates were missing some or all of the metadata used by abbey session review. The sessions existed in the repository, but without canonical metadata they could not participate in the reconciliation workflow. In effect, they had become invisible to Abbey even though they were valid historical work.

The session first completed review of the historical reconciliation workflow session, then audited the entire session-update corpus and normalized every historical session to the current metadata standard.

The work concluded by validating that abbey session review now discovers sessions that had previously been skipped.

Accomplishments

Lessons Learned

Session metadata is operational data rather than cosmetic documentation.

Without canonical metadata, completed historical sessions fall outside the reconciliation workflow, making them effectively invisible despite existing in the repository.

This work also identified an opportunity to improve abbey review by validating session metadata before commits are created, preventing new metadata debt from entering the repository while reporting existing historical issues separately.

Finally, the exercise reinforced the value of validating workflow improvements through practical use. The metadata normalization was not considered complete until the review command successfully discovered a previously hidden historical session.

Reconcile durable planning changes where appropriate, verify accepted unfinished work against the current repository state, and mark each historical session as reviewed before moving to the next.
