Summary

This session established the architectural foundation for the next phase of Abbey Root.

Rather than focusing on the implementation of the upcoming edge01 Raspberry Pi, the work centered on defining stable platform roles that describe the responsibilities of the lab independently of the hardware that implements them.

The session introduced the concept of platform-oriented architecture, distinguishing architecture from inventory and hardware documentation while laying the groundwork for future infrastructure growth.

Accomplishments

• Added the Design Around Stable Responsibilities principle to the architecture framework.
• Created the initial LAB_ARCHITECTURE.md document.
• Created the initial EDGE01_COMMISSIONING.md document.
• Defined the initial platform role model for the Abbey Root lab.
• Established the Infrastructure Services Platform as the architectural role for edge01.
• Selected lab.abbeyroot.com as the planned internal DNS namespace.
• Clarified the separation between architecture, inventory, and hardware documentation.

Lessons Learned

• Platform responsibilities provide a more stable architectural foundation than hardware-centric design.
• Separating architecture from inventory simplifies future implementation changes while preserving long-term design intent.
• Defining responsibilities before implementing services results in clearer service placement and more maintainable infrastructure.
• Small foundation documents reviewed incrementally are more valuable than attempting to complete large architectural documents in a single session.

Next Steps

• Expand LAB_ARCHITECTURE.md with logical topology, networking, DNS, and service placement.
• Develop the complete EDGE01_COMMISSIONING.md workflow.
• Design the Technitium DNS deployment.
• Create an edge inventory group for future infrastructure services.
• Commission edge01 using the documented workflow once the hardware arrives.
• Evaluate future Abbey commands such as abbey edge provision and abbey edge validate after the manual commissioning process has been validated.
