Architecture Framework Introduced
Summary
This session marked a significant architectural milestone for Abbey Root by introducing a dedicated Architecture layer within the project documentation. Rather than documenting engineering concepts across planning documents, reusable frameworks now have a dedicated home that distinguishes architecture from planning, reference material, and operational documentation.
The session established the Engineering Framework as the foundation for future architectural work and began defining the major reusable frameworks that will guide future development within Abbey Root and, eventually, Power Infrastructure.
Accomplishments
- Created the new
docs/architecture/documentation hierarchy. - Added the Architecture section to the project documentation structure.
- Created the initial Engineering Framework document.
- Established Architecture Principles to guide future engineering decisions.
- Defined the initial Workflow Engine architecture.
- Defined the Workflow Contract for reusable workflow implementations.
- Designed the initial Reporting Framework architecture.
- Expanded the CLI Framework to document long-term direction and alignment with the Power Infrastructure
pwrCLI. - Created placeholder documents for the Documentation Framework and Session Framework to support future design work.
- Reinforced Abbey Root’s role as the engineering research and development environment for reusable frameworks.
Lessons Learned
- The project had grown beyond planning, reference documentation, and runbooks; it now required a dedicated architectural layer.
- Separating reusable frameworks from project implementations provides a clearer long-term organization for the project.
- Designing the architectural foundation first made it easier to identify relationships between the Workflow Engine, Workflow Contract, Reporting Framework, CLI, and future Session Framework.
- The relationship between Abbey Root and Power Infrastructure became clearer: Abbey Root serves as the proving ground for reusable engineering concepts before they are promoted into production.
- Architecture work benefits from documenting guiding principles before implementation details.
Next Steps
- Expand the Documentation Framework.
- Expand the Session Framework.
- Review planning document responsibilities and eliminate overlap where appropriate.
- Compare the
abbeyandpwrcommand structures and continue standardizing the sister CLIs. - Prototype the Reporting Framework beginning with email delivery.
- Evaluate a Request Intake Framework to provide a consistent starting point for future workflows.
- Continue refining the Workflow Engine and Workflow Contract as implementation begins.
